For every dollar spent on school-aged students in Wisconsin, $0.09 was spent on infants and toddlers, and $0.20 was spent on preschool-aged children.
Wisconsin invested almost $631 million in early care and education in 2023. Of these investments in birth to kindergarten-entry:
– 33% supported infants and toddlers, and 67% supported children aged three to kindergarten-entry.
– 63% came from federal sources, and 37% came from state funds.
ECE Spending by Program Type
Between 2022 and 2023, Wisconsin increased state-specific spending on children from birth through kindergarten-entry by more than $20 million.
In 2023, Wisconsin supported early care and education through dedicated programs such as Wisconsin Four-Year-Old Kindergarten (4K) and the Birth to Three Program. Continued investments, such as the Wisconsin Act 20, which provides funding for a statewide screening tool, will be reflected in future reports.
