For every dollar spent on school-aged students in New Mexico, $0.23 was spent on infants and toddlers, and $0.32 was spent on preschool-aged children.

 

New Mexico invested over $466 million in early care and education in 2023. Of these investments in birth to kindergarten-entry:

44% supported infants and toddlers, and 56% supported children aged three to kindergarten-entry.

45% came from federal sources, and 55% came from state funds.

ECE Spending by Program Type

Between 2022 and 2023, New Mexico increased state-specific spending on children from birth through kindergarten-entry by almost $34 million.

 

In 2023, New Mexico supported early care and education through dedicated programs such as Early Care and Education and the New Mexico PreKindergarten Program. Continued investments, such as a significant expansion of NM Pre-K, will be reflected in future reports.
