For every dollar spent on school-aged students in Indiana, $0.10 was spent on infants and toddlers, and $0.14 was spent on preschool-aged children.
Indiana invested over $634 million in early care and education in 2023. Of these investments in birth to kindergarten-entry:
– 45% supported infants and toddlers, and 55% supported children aged three to kindergarten-entry.
– 80% came from federal sources, and 20% came from state funds.
ECE Spending by Program Type
Between 2022 and 2023, Indiana increased state-specific spending on children from birth through kindergarten-entry by more than $38 million.
In 2023, Indiana supported early care and education through dedicated programs such as the Office of Early Childhood and Out-of-School Learning and the Pre-K Education Pilot Program. Continued investments, such as an increase in eligibility for On My Way Pre-K, will be reflected in future reports.
