For every dollar spent on school-aged students in Michigan, $0.08 was spent on infants and toddlers, and $0.23 was spent on preschool-aged children.
Michigan invested over $1.3 billion in early care and education in 2023. Of these investments in birth to kindergarten-entry:
– 29% supported infants and toddlers, and 71% supported children aged three to kindergarten-entry.
– 59% came from federal sources, and 41% came from state funds.
ECE Spending by Program Type
Between 2022 and 2023, Michigan increased state-specific spending on children from birth through kindergarten-entry by more than $27 million.
In 2023, Michigan supported early care and education through dedicated programs such as the Great Start Readiness Program and the Child Development and Care Program. Continued investments, such as the PreK for All Initiative, will be reflected in future reports.
